Carlos Manuel Varela

Carlos Manuel Varela (1940-2015) Teatrul dramaturgului Uruguayan Carlos Manuel Varela este strans legat de scena politica a tarii sale. Spre deosebire de piesele dinaintea Dictaturii, cele scrise ȋn timpul Juntei Militare folosesc un limbaj ȋn spatele caruia se pot descifra mesaje politice. Dintre piesele care au primit distinctii de prestigiu, ar fi de mentionat Los cuentos del final (Stories of the End, 198. Distins cu Caja Notorial’s prize, Florencio prize of the Theater Critics Association) si Interrogatorio en Elsinore (1983, Distins cu Education and Culture Ministry’s Unique prize, Montevideo Municipal Management Office’s prize). The theatre of Uruguayan playwright Carlos Manuel Varela is closely connected to the country’s political scene. Unlike the pre-Dictatorship works, the plays written during the period of the military junta circumvent censorship by using a subversive language. Among the plays of this period that were distinguished with prestigious awards are Los cuentos del final (Stories of the End, 1981. Awarded Caja Notorial’s prize, Florencio prize of the Theater Critics Association) and Interrogatorio en Elsinore (1983, Awarded Education and Culture Ministry’s Unique prize, Montevideo Municipal Management Office’s prize). After Uruguay’s return to democracy, Varela continued to write plays and to adapt numerous versions of classic and contemporary texts, wrote television scripts, and commented on Shakespeare, Berthold Brecht and the Uruguayan Theater. His works have been included in several anthologies and staged in Argentina, Paraguay, Australia, Mexico, Italy, El Salvador, and Brazil.
